The DJI Mavic Pro took the world by storm when it was launched just two weeks ago and is now set to make waves here in Malaysia. The Mavic Pro is a 4K video recording drone that is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Other than the drone, DJI also launched their Osmo Mobile smartphone gimbal for the local market.

DJI Mavic Pro

The Mavic Pro is DJI’s latest drone offering following the successful Phantom 4; which was released just six months ago. Surprisingly, the Mavic Pro has all of the features (and more) that are present on the Phantom 4 but its size and weight is only half of the Phantom’s. DJI achieved this feat by having both the propeller and propeller arms fold inwards over the body, minimising the drone’s overall profile immensely.

As mentioned before, the Mavic Pro does not sacrifice any of the features that the Phantom 4 was known for despite its small form factor. The Mavic Pro still has optical sensors located around the drone to execute features like subject tracking, obstacle avoidance, precision landing, and even indoor flight stability without GPS.

The 12-megapixel camera on the new Mavic Pro uses the same sensor found on the Phantom 4 which shoots 4K videos at 30fps and 1080p videos at 96fps. However, the field of view on the Mavic Pro is smaller than that of the Phantom’s (78 degrees instead of 94 degrees).

The Mavic Pro is also capable of live streaming video from up to 7KM away. This new feature will be useful for live stream services like Facebook Live, YouTube and Periscope, which DJI says is coming in the near future. You won’t have to worry about the drone running out of battery as well as the Mavic Pro’s battery life is claimed to be 27 minutes long; just one minute shy of the much bigger Phantom 4.

DJI Osmo Mobile

Launching alongside the Mavic Pro is the new DJI Osmo Mobile – a 3-axis stabilised gimbal for your smartphone. The main difference between the new Osmo Mobile and the original Osmo (which we’ve reviewed) is that there is no built-in camera. All you have to do is attach your smartphone, connect it to the Osmo Mobile through the DJI Go application, and 3-axis stabilised videos are right at your fingertips.

With the Osmo Mobile you can make use of the tracking software found on DJI’s drones and outline a subject on your phone’s screen to track them. The Osmo Mobile’s head will intelligently rotate and follow the subject around. There are also a variety of picture modes like long exposure, panorama and motion timelapse available via the DJI Go app.

As for pricing and availability of the two new DJI products, the Mavic Pro with its included controller will cost RM4,556.94 (inclusive of GST). A Mavic Pro package that includes extra goodies like a shoulder bag, extra batteries and more will cost RM5934.94 (inclusive of GST). The Mavic Pro drone will be available in November.

The DJI Osmo Mobile on the other hand goes for RM1,376.94 (inclusive of GST) and is available for purchase now.
