Bleacher Report is a US-based sports news website with a twist: since its inception on 2006, it provides an avenue for amateur writers to have their sports-related write-ups professionally edited and posted on the website. Today it is the third most-visited sports media website in the US, reaching out to almost 40 million visitors a month.

What was unique about Bleacher Report was that the website had a dedicated section for European football – something almost unheard of for a US publication. The articles, which were written mostly by non-professional writers, were actually very informative as well. This was a writing community at its most conducive.

So it was a little heartwarming for me to hear that Bleacher Report was recently sold to Time Warner for $175 million, and incorporated into its Turner Sports division. Not bad for a publication that started out by four sports fans and running almost exclusively on passionate contributors.
