MCMC Fines Telcos 2015

It’s the time of the year again, MCMC recently announced that it has issued our local telcos a total of 23 compounds amounting to RM1.01 million. The compounds have been issued to key local players like Digi, Maxis, Celcom, U Mobile, Tune Talk and XOX for dropped call issues and improper registration for prepaid users.

MCMC’s compounds for dropped calls are for Digi, Maxis and Celcom who are fined RM180,000, RM170,000 and RM130,000 respectively. This is actually a whole lot less compared to last year’s fines for these telcos. Just a year ago, Digi was fined RM480,000, Maxis RM360,000, Celcom RM310,000 and U Mobile RM50,000 only for dropped calls problem. This is a significant drop and hopefully, it means that there are less dropped call problems now.

As for prepaid registration issues, the players fined are Celcom for RM200,000, Maxis for RM150,000, U Mobile for RM100,000, Tune Talk for RM70,000 and XOX for RM10,000. MCMC takes prepaid registrations very seriously to help prevent crime but unfortunately, it looks like certain prepaid telcos are not following proper procedures. MCMC did not detail out the problems, but did mention that they saw incidents where personal information of others have been used for criminal activities.

It’s definitely great to see MCMC actively monitoring telco providers to ensure end users are receiving proper services. Judging from the differences between last year’s fine and this year’s fine, it looks like it’s pretty effective too. Have you noticed an improvement for dropped call issues from your mobile provider?
