Perhaps frustrated by local telecommunications providers’ continued unsatisfactory response towards complaints over their networks, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is now looking for an alternative to ease the suffering of many consumers.

The MCMC is studying the feasibility of offering rebates to consumers who are constantly experiencing dropped calls due to poor network issues. Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Jailani Johari stated that the commission is currently in talks with the local telecommunications providers over this matter. It is likely that this matter is very much in its infancy, as details on how this system would work was not revealed.

In addition, Datuk Jailani also added that this very common phenomenon of dropped calls will likely be reduced in the future, as 1,000 new radio telecommunications towers are currently being built to increase network coverage around the country. Once completed, these towers should mean one less avenue for telcos to hide behind.

Poor reception is an issue that is unfortunately a very prevalent issue that plagues Malaysian consumers on all telcos. On numerous occasions the MCMC has dished out some massive fines in recent times to all local telcos for offences such as dropped calls as well as slower-than-advertised mobile Internet speeds. It looks like despite these compounds, the local telcos are still not offering satisfactory services.

Maybe decreasing these companies’ profits will do the trick.
