Steam Music

Valve has been making quite a few changes to Steam lately, and the most recent change is the implementation of the Steam Music Player. This new feature will allow users to play songs stored on their computers directly from Steam, without having to launch any other media player. While the Steam Music Player is not actually new, it has been in the testing phase for several months, it is only now launching to all Steam users.

Accessing the Steam Music Player is easy enough. The option resides on the Library drop down menu, and it helpfully lists every music track it can find. Just in case the user doesn’t have any music stored on their computer because everyone uses streaming services now, Valve is giving away the soundtracks to their most popular games for free until 1 October 2014. The catch is that these soundtracks are DLC and can only be accessed if the owner has bought the associated game and has it installed. Thankfully, the price of these games has also been dropped by 75% for the same period to ensure that everyone is able to enjoy the new feature.

With any luck Valve will find a way to include music streaming into the Steam Music Player overlay, and make it even easier for users to access everything they want. In fact, it would be great if they could throw in video streaming as well. At the rate that Valve and Steam is growing, it might not totally be outside the realm of possibility.
