Think of a laptop that costs USD$100; I bet the first impression would be a bulky low end device that are packed with as little features as ever right? Well, not this OLPC prototype that is currently being showed off at the on-going CES, not really at least. While it may be rather bulky, it is designed to be extremely resilient and even waterproof.

While it may have some rather low end specifications such as Marvell Armada PXA618 processor, a mere 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and all the standard ports such as USB, microUSB, audio in/out, and sensor inputs, what I find most impressive is how energy efficient it is. It can be charged using different methods including using a solar powered cover and even a hand crank – just turn the hand crank for 6 minutes and you can get up to an hour of juice.

Software wise, it’ll either come with Android or OLPC’s own Sugar OS. According to a hands-on by Gizmodo, it looks like the Sugar OS is rather slow and the icons are confusing but hey, this is only a prototype.
