Western Digital (WD) today unveiled the new WD TV – Personal Edition, a Wi-Fi connected media player for your TV that plays a variety of formats of media file, and doubles as a network storage device on the home network. Jim Welsh, the executive vice president of WD Content Solutions Business, claims that consumers have increasingly large distinct personal content types that spreads across a variety of platforms from portable USB to personal computers. WD is trying to change that by creating a seamless experience across all screens from mobile devices to the home theatre through their ecosystem of apps and media players. The WD TV – Personal Edition allow users to consume a variety of personal media such as music, video and photos. It supports a range of file formats, including MKV, MP4, AVI, WMV, MOV and more. Files can be streamed directly from a connected USB drive, personal cloud or network attached storage drives like WD’s My Cloud product family, digital cameras, and any network connected personal computers at home. In addition, users can also stream Full HD content through their Miracast-enabled mobile devices. There will be WD’s latest intuitive user interface with options to customise the homepage with apps, create shortcuts to favourite content folder, and enable auto-run for preferred apps on startup. Online entertainment can be accessed through apps such as Youtube, Spotify and Facebook that comes pre-installed. Users can download the free WD TV Remote app and turn their iOS or Android devices into a wireless controller for their media player. It is interesting to see how WD marches their way into the media streaming market by bringing distinctive features to their users when there are several players already making their mark such as Amazon Fire TV, Roku 3, and Google’s Chromecast.
WD TV is currently priced at RM359.00 and available at select retailers. For more information, head on to their website here. Link : Western Digital Redefines Media Player | |
