The new iPod Nano has been given a complete rehaul this year, with a larger screen compared to its predecessor. It now sports a 2.5-inch widescreen display that supports multi-touch gestures. There’s also Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless pairing of headphones, speakers and even car audio devices.

This iteration of the iPod nano is also the thinnest ever made, at an anorexic 5.4mm thin. But of course, at its core, the iPod nano is a music player. And a pretty good one at that. There are playback filtering by favourite songs, albums, artists, genres and even composers. In addition, users can even shuffle to different songs in the music library simply by shaking the iPod.

Apple has also introduced Genius, a nifty assistant within the iPod that helps with music selection. It creates playlists based on songs in the library that go well together. It can also create Genius Mixes based on songs available on iTunes, and sync it to the iPod nano.

Interestingly, there is also an FM radio transmitter, allowing users to listen to the radio with the attached headphones. What’s different this time is the addition of Live Pause, which allows users to “pause” the broadcast from a radio station, rewind as far back as 15 minutes, and then fast-forward back to the live broadcast.

Fitness buffs and avid runners will also like the fact that the new iPod nano will have built-in Nike+ support that works with the pedometer also found inside the iPod nano. This negates the need for users to connect receivers or shoe sensors to track running progress. Also, the iPod nano can be synced with nikeplus.com.

As with the iPhone 5 and the new iPod touch, the new iPod nano will also use the latest Lightning connector, and come bundled with the new EarPods.

The iPod nano will be available for pre-orders from the Apple online Store from tomorrow (14 September) at a price of RM529. They will be available in 16GB only and in seven colours, as well as a special (PRODUCT) RED edition, where part of the proceeds will go to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.
